February Round-Up

I never expect much from February, but this has been a great month in Blue Roses world.

Back to the 90s with incredible gigs from Ash, Cast and James.

Discovering a fantastic new band and getting to know them better, I can’t wait to share my interview with Magic Seas.

Celebrating album culture with the book launch of Keith Jopling new publication, Body of Work, which is now at the top of my reading pile.

Highlight

The Listening Room – a collaboration between Q Acoustic and DIY Magazine, with guest Tim Burgess, at The Lower Third, Soho. An intimate venue, a chat about music, and listening to records on exceptional equipment – the sound was amazing. More about this to follow.

Earworm of the month

Live The Dream by Cast. Not a new song but one that I have newly discovered. I find it really uplifting and inspirational. Just be yourself and live your dream.

Coming up next month…

Looking forward to throwbacks/anniversary tours with Paul Draper of Mansun, The Feeling and Scouting For Girls. But they are all towards the end of March so I’m hoping to get more gigs or other music events lined up as well!

January Round-Up

Blue Roses Fanzine 2.0 is off to a flying start. I’ve already had about as many visitors as I sold paper copies in the early days of Blue Roses, from all over the world. It is very exciting that location is no longer a barrier to reaching music fans.

Hello world!

I’d love to know what you think. Please comment on here or on my socials (X or Instagram), subscribe or follow for updates.

Highlight

The Merch Market was incredible and allowed me to fully immerse myself in grassroots music and zine culture.

Read about my day at the Merch Market, The Cords, Tim Burgess and Zine Age Kicks. Plenty more to come over the coming months of my discoveries from the day.

Earworm of the month

“Fell on your sword

In a rush to be bored

I of course realise it was my mistake

But the point was just too hard to make”

A Point Too Hard To Make by The Cribs, from their new album Selling a Vibe, has been playing in my head for weeks. An upbeat, swirling tune with alternating vocalists for the chorus. It’s urgent, it’s raucous and the lyrics helped me navigate through a tough situation.

Coming up…

Excited that two 90s legends are back at Circuit next week – Cast and James playing back to back!

I’ve also got some exciting news about interviews with fantastic bands. Watch this space!!

Introducing… Blue Roses fanzine 2.0

I’ve heard a lot of great music recently which has inspired me to reboot Blue Roses fanzine… but where to start?!

I’m incredibly lucky to have Banquet Records on my doorstep and have enjoyed the live shows in Kingston for many years. The original Blue Roses had me traipsing up and down the country to see great bands, and these days I mostly see them in Kingston!

My resolution for 2026 is to see even more live music. Plenty of my favourite bands from the 90s are touring and I also hope to discover some new and exciting artists.

I haven’t written in a while so I set myself a challenge of reflecting on some of the gigs that I went to in 2025. Some are more detailed than others as I’m writing from memory but I wanted to share some of the live music that I have experienced in the last 12 months.

OK, yes I am a huge fan of The Charlatans and they were partly the inspiration for this reboot.

I’m excited to see what 2026 has in store.

Thanks for reading. Get in touch and let me know what you think!
